COURSE INFO
The course is offered from Base Medical. Wilderness First Aid prepares participants with the knowledge and skills to respond to medical emergencies in remote and challenging environments. The program includes eight hours of online instruction, followed by eight hours of in-person practical training to practice skills. The online portion is completed at your own pace. The in-person practice will take place at the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department. This course will prepare participants to respond to emergencies in your backyard or out in the backcountry.

- Assessment: Learn to assess injuries quickly and accurately in outdoor settings, considering environmental factors and limited resources.
- Medical Emergency Response: Gain practical skills in responding to common outdoor medical emergencies, including fractures, sprains, burns, bites, and more.
- Improvised First Aid Techniques: Explore creative solutions when first aid supplies are limited.
- Environmental Considerations: Understand the impact of the environment on medical situations, including exposure, dehydration and how to mitigate these challenges.
- Communication and Evacuation: Discuss communication strategies in remote areas and make evacuation decisions when professional medical help is required.
- Practical Scenarios: Engage in realistic, hands-on scenarios to practice skills.

INSTRUCTOR INFO
Janet Peterson, DrPH, RDN, WEMT, has over 20 years of experience teaching wilderness medicine including Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder courses. Her teaching style blends theory and practice with a focus on hands-on training and real-world scenarios. Janet ensures a supportive learning environment which allows students to translate theory into practical, hands-on lessons. Outside of her professional pursuits, Janet enjoys human-powered outdoor activities. When not teaching or playing in the backcountry with her pup, Bonnie, Janet loves to read, cook and occasionally dabbles in writing fiction.
